Pharmacies in Lanzarote — what to know
Spotting a farmacia
Spanish pharmacies are marked by a green cross (often illuminated) above the entrance. The word on the sign is Farmacia. They sell prescription medicines, over-the-counter treatments, baby products, sunscreen, and basic health supplies.
Over-the-counter medication
Many medicines that require a prescription in the UK are available over the counter in Spanish pharmacies — including some antibiotics, stronger pain relief, and eye drops. Ask the pharmacist (el farmacéutico) directly — they are trained clinicians and can advise.
Prescriptions from home
A UK or EU prescription is not automatically valid in Spain. If you've run out of regular medication, see a doctor at a private clinic — they can prescribe the Spanish equivalent. Many chronic medications are available in Spanish pharmacies without a local prescription, but check with the pharmacist first.
Opening hours & duty rota
Most Lanzarote pharmacies are open 7 days a week with similar hours each day. Hours vary by location — check Google Maps for exact times. Outside normal hours, a duty rota (farmacia de guardia) ensures at least one pharmacy is open in each area. The rota is often posted in pharmacy windows.
