Pharmacy Puerto del Carmen — what to know

Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote's busiest tourist resort and has more farmacias than anywhere outside Arrecife. They are spread along the main tourist strip (Avenida de las Playas), the old harbour area, and the residential streets behind. All are marked by the illuminated green cross and the word Farmacia above the entrance.

Opening hours

Most Puerto del Carmen farmacias are open seven days a week. Hours are broadly consistent through the week — typically from around 09:00 to 21:00, though individual pharmacies vary. Check the pharmacy door or Google Maps for exact times. Outside normal hours, a duty pharmacy (farmacia de guardia) remains open — the rota is posted in every pharmacy window, and the duty location rotates daily.

What you can buy without a prescription

Spanish pharmacies carry a broader range of medicines over the counter than many visitors are used to. Painkillers, antihistamines, diarrhoea remedies, rehydration sachets, eye drops, sun cream, insect repellent, and some antibiotics are typically available without a prescription. If you have run out of a regular medication from home, the pharmacist can often supply the Spanish equivalent — or advise on the closest clinic if a prescription is required.

English-speaking staff

Given the volume of British and international tourists, many pharmacy staff in Puerto del Carmen speak basic to good English. If you need help explaining a symptom or finding the right product, our Spanish medical phrases guide covers pharmacy vocabulary — including how to ask for medication, describe what you need, and request something for a fever, pain or stomach problem.
